THE MOST IMPORTANT SPORT CHALLENGE ON THE PARAMOTOR HISTORY

FROM JEREZ – ANDALUCÍA TO LOS REALEJOS – CANARIAS
1350 Km over the Atlantic Ocean

The challenge consists in flying in a paramotor device from Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) to Los Realejos (Tenerife). The flight distance is over 1350 Km which will be only taken by this aircraft with the support of the trade winds. In that way, that lightest and most autonomous aircraft of the current aviation will get to increase the known limits pointing a world record.

That journey is part of the III International Paragliding Festival of Los Realejos, FLYPA ’07, which will take place in that Tenerife town from April 27th to May 1st 2007. Nevertheless, that journey will be taken, depending on the climatic conditions, on a near period before the Festival time.

This event, one of the most important in the world, is an international sport reference because of its high quality; well, outside the track of free gliding competitions, it has got the capacity to call more than 300 pilots and over 100 journalists coming from everywhere in the world. It has achieved a mass media repercussion all over the world.

THE PILOT

Ramón Morillas Salmerón is at present 39 and he was born on June 22nd in 1967, in Granada. He has represented Spain on six World Championships and three in Europe. Nowadays, he has got the recognition as”High Level Sport Man” of the Upper Sport Bureau and  “High Performance Sport Man” of the Andalucía Government. He is also a National Instructor o0n Paragliding and Paramotor.

Ramón, has got the following prizes:

  • Four Golden medals on the World Championships.

  • Two Golden ones and one bronze medal on the Europe Championships.

  • Winner of eight Spain Championships.

  • Two records on Distance: 641 km and 951 km.

  • Two records on Height: 5.414 m and 6.102 m.

  • Record on Japanese Slalom: 56 s

As a member of the Draco team has the support and experience of his own team.

THE PARAMOTOR

The paramotor with a feet take off  is a paragliding device which is provided with an auxiliary propulsion, that is to say, with an explosion motor which functions in twice and air- cooled, consuming over 4 litres of fuel par hour and it is installed at the back side of the pilot seat.

Nowadays, as an aerial sport, the paramotor is the most autonomous, the lightest and most recent, since it just counts on 20 years history. The aircraft, when it is empty , weights 30 Kg., and allows to take off and land in a space less than 30 metres.

HISTORY ABOUT THE LARGE ROUTES IN PARAMOTOR

There have been some pilots who have deepened during their travels in paramotor. As just one flight as in several stages there have been very relevant routes. The first FAI distance record is hold by Pierre Allet over 307’41 km, taken place in 1996. Ramón Morillas surpassed that record over 644 km  in 1997, flying over the Mainland. In 2005, the Russian pilot Vladimir Makurin came to get it over 710’4 km. In straight line in Siberia, where they enjoy during Summer time more than 19 hours of sunny times.

In 2006, Ramón Morillas, after several months on preparation and choosing the days of greatest winds, he came again to brake the record placing this time the record over 951 km., from the towns of Lepe (Huelva) and Arue (Roquefort  - France). The pilot took that unforgettable flight in just 12 hours. That was possible because of the strength on height of the Southern winds. During many hours he could flight getting more than 110 km./h. He took off carrying 50 litres of fuel, and proving that way that the bar of 1000 km is reachable.

THE WAY TO TAKE THE FLIGHT

The most important matter to get that flight is the support of the trade winds. Those winds are the ones that the ships use to make those classical journeys which date from 1492 by the famous sailor Cristóbal Colón. The trade winds are air streams which go South or Southeast  direction through the Atlantic coastlines from the Mainland till the Canary Islands and they continue their route to the West towards the Caribbean sea.

Taking into account that the paramotor gets an average speed of 50 km  par hour, we need to sum up 50 Km of trade winds to reach an average of 100 Km.
to take the route in 14 hours. It is important to stand up that we have to wait for the suitable climatic conditions from the end of March.
The take off will be from the Jerez airport early in the morning, carrying 60 Kg of fuel which will raise the whole equipment with a load over 100 Kg. at the back of the pilot.

During the first minutes he will fly over the area of the airport to get enough altitude.

The first direction will be to the Cádiz Bay, looking for the visual contact with the SAR helicopter which will take off from Rota.

Afterwards, the right route of the journey will depend on the suitable climatic conditions of the chosen day. He will fly between 1000 and 2000 metres over the sea level and around a maximum distance of 200 Km. from the African coasts, on the high seas.

Official Take Off

The place regarded to land is placed in El Socorro Beach, in the municipal district of Los Realejos, according to the climatic conditions and good condition of the pilot, there is the option of landing in an auxiliary setting.

Optional Routes

Due to the long distance he has to go across and the climatic changes, as regards the direction and strength of the wind, it is possible that the landing point is not the firstly forseen.
To derive towards the East, means that he has to go to Lanzarote as the nearest point or to the Morocco coast if the speed of the route is not the right one.
Towards West side, the only option is going to the Wild Islands.

The important decisions

The climatic analysis to opt for the take off day will be very important about the evolution of the future events. An expert team will advice the pilot and it will be communicated at least 36 hours before taking off.
From the first flight hours the approximate time to come to Los Realejos is calculated, but it will take place between six or eight hours from the time of taking off, when Ramón Morillas has to calculate, by means of little directional changes, deciding the best route to take land before night.
Between eight and ten flight hours there will already be a set route.

SECURITY AND RESCUE-AERIAL ARMY

As a first security measure, the Aerial Army will take two SAR helicopters, which will follow visually the pilot in different shift. Besides a 235 plane of the Aerial Army on the support mission and the press coverage.

The pilot, besides the flight equipment itself, the navigation tools and the record validation, will bring two search satellite systems which will work in a double function, one on the security to know where he is going all the time and the other on the media search, since those data will be taken through Internet by the people.
The first of those systems will transmit each five minutes and the other each 30 minutes as the back – up line to the main one. He will also bring a radio buoy which functions when falling down into water and 2 satellite mobile phone to do emergency calls or to contact directly with the mass media. One individual boat will be the optional medium if he falls down into water while waiting for the helicopter rescue.
As quick visual measures if he falls down into the sea, he will carry some flares, a marine colorant which works into contact with water, besides the lamps and the stroboscopic lights at night. The motor device is also ready to float.

In the case of the motor stop, the pilot  will do an alert call taking the opposite route. From that moment till landing, he will take over 15 minutes (3 coincidental positions). Those data will be seen, by Internet, in the control centre of the organisation setting. At the moment he touches water the radio buoy will inform any nearby craft in that area and the international rescue media.
In case there are bad weather conditions or  because of any problem during the flight, Ramón has to take another different route to Los Realejos, there have been arranged support and search mechanisms in Lanzarote and Morocco.

TRANSMISSION OF THE JOURNEY ON LIVE BROADCAST BY INTERNET

The visual search of the journey on live broadcast, thanks to the localisation tools the pilot will carry, will be done through the following web sites:

The Town Council of Los Realejos, will arrange the auditorium of the Municipal Culture Bureau to follow the broadcast of the journey, making easy for the people fond of this type of sport, to the rest of people and the authorised mass media to follow it. Apart from that, there will be some images on the preparations of this great adventure.
